A. Levasseur, Rue du Sorbier Brut NV
Producing just 35,000 bottles per year which in Champagne terms really is a micro-winery, A (for Albert) Levasseur has been in operation since the 1940s. Now headed up by grandson David, they pride themselves on producing fully organic wine from vines up to 50 years old, punching well above their weight in what is one of the most storied wine regions in the world. Rue du Sorbier Brut NV is named for the street on which David lives (no.4) and where his winery sits (no.6). It's a blend of 80% Pinot Meunier, 15% Pinot Noir and 5% Chardonnay. Mid-lemon in colour, the nose has vibrant citrus aromas with a velvety red apple undertone. On the palate these expressive, fruity notes are balanced with the classic, elegant Champagne flavours of white peach, custard tart and brioche. It makes for a superb sparkling wine to pair with sushi and other lighter fish dishes.
